Here is a little more about what inspired me to get in the yard rehab business.
Our Story
Within a few months after I moved into my new home, my daughter and son in law bought a two year old home about 2 blocks away with a severely neglected yard. It had about 50% weeds and 50% very unhealthy St Augustine grass along with poorly designed overgrown landscape beds. After seeing the results I had with my new yard, they dreamed of transforming their yard into an environment that they could enjoy and take pride in. The previous home they had in The Woodlands was a town home with a very small, heavily shaded yard with very little grass. They also had very little time after tending to their two small children. So neither of them had any experience with yard work. Within days after moving and getting settled in they started pulling weeds, literally thousands of them. My son in law, Thomas, who suffers from PTSD after serving 2 tours as an Army medic, found solitude in transforming his new yard. He would spend hours sitting on the ground pulling weeds. We removed several of the poorly placed dying plants and prepared the beds for a new design that would work. Next we aerated the entire yard, set the irrigation to work adequately and fertilized. Within 3 weeks things started drastically improving. Starting in the spring he will see a major transformation from their efforts.
My new next door neighbor, Eddie Sanchez, is also a disabled vet that served several tours in the medical field in Iraq and Afghanistan. He had just retired and sought my help with creating and maintaining a desirable yard for his new home. In the past he had never had a yard to maintain so all this was very new to him. Fortunately, he didn't have to remove any of his plants. I gave him some advice on the proper soil conditions for many of his shrubs to correct the PH. He now has a yard that exceeds all in the neighborhood except mine. He too has found peace and solitude maintaining his new outdoor environment and is constantly trying to exceed his yard mentor.
So after seeing a need I decided to start Texas Yard Rehab to help new homeowners and at the same time give a sense of purpose to some of those that have served our country and have paid a heavy price for it.
